The Design of Books: An Explainer for Authors, Editors, Agents, and Other Curious Readers

Authors and editors: The book you’re working on is going to, eventually, be designed. What the heck goes into that and what parts are relevant to you?

After 20 years as a professional book designer, I’ve written a book that is accessible and useful (and even a little bit fun) to the non-designers who work with (or just love) books.

The Design of Books explores the physical specs of books, page layout, and, of course, cover design. There are chapters focusing on illustrated books and ebooks. AND a chapter on the design process for both traditionally-published and self-publishing authors.

Come learn how text and design interact and what folks on the editorial side can do to make the process easier and the results more beautiful!

Reviews

Booklist starred review:
“From the printer’s specifications—choices about size, binding, and other physical characteristics that dictate the look and feel of the finished product—through typography, layout, and cover design, Berne gives the reader an insider’s look at how a manuscript becomes a book. . . .A must for aspiring authors, this accessible, even entertaining guide will also appeal to book nerds who read the “About the Type” page when it appears at the end of a book”

The Bookseller (UK):
“Catnip to booksellers, this is an introduction to how books are designed, both from aesthetic and commercial considerations. The author is a book designer herself and this is a practical guide for all involved in the production process, exploring how design can enhance the appeal and usefulness of books.”

Library Journal:
”Professional book designer Berne debuts with her first self-authored (and designed) title that seemingly anticipates every question people curious about book production might ask, as well as many they probably hadn’t thought about. Typefaces, print runs, paper quality, spacing, and the visual impact of illustrations and covers all receive her attention and careful consideration. . . A must for authors, editors, designers, and curious readers. Give to those who enjoyed ABC for Book Collectors by John Carter and Nicolas Barker. They’ll love this book too.”
